Sevastopol is the major city in the Western Crimea. The first settlement on the territory of present-day Sevastopol was founded as early as the last quarter of the 5th century BC by the ancient Greeks. The city of Chersoneses existed until the 14th century. Nowadays, the Chersonese ruins represent one of the main attractions of tourists in Sevastopol.

The city of Sevastopol proper was founded by Russians in 1783. The name of Sevastopol is translated from Greek as “the city of glory”. Sevastopol has been Russia’s main navy base in the Black Sea region. Sevastopol was severely ruined in the times of the World War II, but in 1949 the heroic city of Sevastopol was reconstructed in accordance with classical architectural forms.

Present-day Sevastopol is a beautiful city with a uniquely picturesque embankment. Near the Sevastopol embankment, in the sea there stands the Monument to the Scuttled Ships which symbolizes the courage and glory of the heroic city of Sevastopol. There are many historical monuments in Sevastopol. For instance, in the premises of Sevastopol there is the Chersonese monastery which is the one of the oldest existing Christian orthodox monasteries in the world. Sevastopol is literally full of monuments of military history, such as the Sevastopol Navy Museum, the adjutant-general Totleben monument, the admiral Ushakov monument, the admiral Nakhimov monument, the vice-admiral Kornilov monument and many other monument to the personalities who played a significant part in the history of Sevastopol. In the premises of Sevastopol there is a diorama dedicated to the heroic defenders of Sevastopol during the times of the World War II. Excursions are conducted in the memorial places of the Almin Battle (the Battle of Alma) which took place near Sevastopol in the times of the Crimean War. Spectacular navy parades are taking place in Sevastopol twice a year: on the 9th of May – the Victory Day, and on the last Sunday of July – the Navy Day.

Sevastopol is not only famous due to its navy and military monuments. Resorts of Sevastopol are also quite popular among tourists. In the territory of Sevastopol there is a luxurious Omega beach. And for those who like to spend their time in peace and solitude, Sevastopol has to offer the remote Fiolent beach which is situated in the premises of Sevastopol. People who are fond of hanging out in night clubs will also find Sevastopol an interesting place, as there are many night clubs to any taste in Sevastopol.

Among spectacular events taking place in Sevastopol, there is the annual bike show which takes place in the premises of Sevastopol in early July. Commonly, the program of the Sevastopol bike show consists not only of the bike show itself. Famous international rock stars come to Sevastopol to play their music on the stage of the annual Sevastopol bike show.
The famous Inkerman wine factory is situated near Sevatopol. Its wine cellars are welcoming wine tourists coming to Sevastopol from allover the world to taste unique Sevastopol wines.

Every yachtsman in the world knows about the remote district of Sevastopol, called Balaklava. In this place near Sevastopol, the famous Balaklava Yacht Club is situated.

The most common ways of getting to Sevastopol are by train, by bus or by car. One can also get to Simferopol by airplane, and then get to Sevastopol by train or by bus.
